In a significant political development, the African Transformation Movement (ATM) and the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party officially announced a coalition partnership following a landmark meeting in Durban on 5 March 2025.
The alliance, forged ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, will see both parties collaborate on political, community, and parliamentary initiatives. As part of the agreement, the MK Party, led by former President Jacob Zuma, and the ATM will support each other's candidates in upcoming by-elections and coordinate their campaigns at the local level.
ATM leadership views the partnership as a strategic move to amplify the voices of communities that feel underserved by the current governing coalition. Both parties share common ground on issues such as land reform, economic transformation, and social justice.
While the alliance represents an exciting opportunity for growth, some within ATM have expressed concerns about maintaining the party's distinct identity within the partnership. The party has emphasised that its faith-based values and social democratic principles will remain non-negotiable.
